Environmentalists tend to mistakenly think there are unintended consequences of their pet projects. No matter what we do, humans are going to have an effect on the environment. The best way to reduce our environmental footprint is to promote economic freedom. It seems counterintuitive, but countries with more economic freedom are less likely to cut down all their trees, pollute their rivers, and kill all their animals.
